The groundsel is found in cultivated and disturbed ground and is wide spread. It’s a small annual plant that is cylindrical that has 10mm long heads of small yellow disc florets, about 4-5cm across. It forms a fluffy seed head and disperses its seed in the wind.
Folklore
In Irish folklore, the groundsel was used as a cure for headache. The name groundsel comes from the old English ‘gundeswilge’ from ‘gund’ meaning pus swelgan to swallow, from its uses in poutices.
